Walkden is 7 miles from Manchester and 6 miles northwest of Salford. The East Lancashire Road runs parallel to Walkden, with connections to the M60 ring-road and the motorway network offering the town extensive transport links.
Leisure
Blackleach Country Park is in the old industrial area of Walkden. It contains a lake, which is home to a wildlife reserve.
Shopping
Ellesmere Centre is the local shopping precinct and the adjacent retail park includes a 24-hour Tesco superstore, Kwik Save, Total Fitness and a Buckingham Bingo Hall. Well known High St brands, stores and banks can be found on Bolton Rd.
Public Transport
The local railway station is located on Walkden Road and is a five-minute walk from the town centre. There are also extensive and frequent bus services, mainly operated by First Manchester, linking the town with Manchester, Bolton and Leigh.

Education
Walkden has several primary schools, two high schools and a college.
A number of the town's primary schools are Church schools. They include: St Paul's Crompton Street and St Paul's Heathside, which are both Church of England. Christ the King is the Catholic primary school for Walkden, Worsley and Roe Green. In addition there are three county primary schools: North Walkden County Primary in the north of the town and in South Walkden, Mesne Lea and James Brindley.
Salford College, a vocational post-16 college, has its main facilities in Walkden at the 'Worsley Campus', close to the railway station.
