The Respect Standard
Irwell Valley is a signatory to the through signing up to the Government’s Respect Standard – a standard which commits us to the following 6 point plan:
  1. Accountability, leadership and commitment – we are committed to the community and being transparent and accountable for all we do.
  2. Empowering and reassuring residents – nobody knows better than the community about what it wants and needs. We aim to put the community at the heart of the agenda so that we both work as one.
  3. Prevention and early intervention. Some anti-social behaviour can be nipped in the bud. If problems are not dealt with quickly they can often escalate.
  4. Tailored services for residents and provision of support for victims and witnesses. Many people find it stressful to make complaints so we need to make it as easy as possible for you to kick start action by reporting incidents. This is especially important if court action takes place and someone is asked to give evidence.
  5. Protecting communities through swift enforcement. Government has provided us with a variety of tools with which to tackle a whole range of anti-social behaviour. These include Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBO’s), injunctions and measures to take away security of tenure. We understand how these tools work and how we can use them at the right time to protect neighbourhoods quickly
  6. Support to tackle the causes of anti-social behaviour. The first priority must always be to protect the community from anti-social behaviour but we need solutions that work in the long term. Often the best way to do this is to offer support to people to change their behaviour.Support programmes can get to the root causes and put an end to behaviour that damages other people’s live.

We will be monitoring our progress against the above through our Service Excellence Plans and will be involving residents in developing local strategies and action plans within their neighbourhoods to tackle anti-social behaviour and promote respect. For more details on the Respect Agenda and information on what we are doing around anti-social behaviour and Respect in your neighbourhood please contact your Positive Behaviour Manager.
