Silver Service at The Sunshine Café

Trafford Borough Council has presented Irwell Valley’s Sunshine Café with a silver certificate Healthy Choices Award for its food standards and providing a wide range of healthy menu options.

The Trafford Healthy Choices Award is collaboration between Trafford Council and NHS Trafford to encourage food businesses, including staff canteens, to provide healthier menus and promote healthier choices to their customers to enable them to make informed choices about nutrition and lifestyle habits.

The Sunshine Café received their certificate at an event on June 9 hosted by Manchester United.

Beverley Jones, Café co-ordinator is delighted.

‘It’s a fantastic endorsement of all our hard work and commitment to making the Café a first port of call for delicious healthy food.

Asked what’s most popular on the menu, Beverley added

‘It has to be the Mushroom Stroganoff – but with the recent warm weather, our Summer Salads are in great demand.’

Five other businesses received certificates for the inaugural awards, which included nationwide chain Prêt A Manger (silver) and Manchester United Staff Canteen presented with a bronze certificate.

The Sunshine Café, which is staffed by part-time workers and volunteers, opened as a food co-operative and meeting place for residents in 2003. In 2006, it received the FSA Dame Sheila McKechnie Award for ‘empowering communities’ and ‘attacking poverty’.
